Halloween is barely behind us, but starting this Saturday, Arizonans will be able to buy a permit to cut down their own Christmas tree.

Pamela Baltimore is with the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest, and she says cutting down a Christmas tree is a tradition for many families.

“This thing goes back for generations,” Baltimore said. “We hear great stories from people that their families have come up to different forests and have done so for many years.

The first batch of about 6,000 permits will go on sale at Big 5 stores around the state. Some 4,600 more will be available at forest service offices later this month.
