A traffic stop on Monday, on the I-10 south of Chandler, resulted in the arrest of a Mexican National the Department of Public Safety says may have been on his way to deliver supplies to a Mexican cartel operating in the desert.

DPS spokesman Raul Garcia says multiple batteries and cell phones were found when the vehicle was stopped in Sun Lakes, along with a loaded handgun and ammunition for it.

“The truck was loaded with a significant amount of survival gear, along with food, beverages and clothing, including multiple pairs of walking shoes and camouflage jackets,” Garcia said.

He says the statements of 26-year-old Angel Flores Tirado, along with the items in the truck, point to his likely involvement in an effort to re-supply cartel members operating in the desert. The vehicle was stopped after a chase that began when the suspect was pulled over on I-10 for a traffic violation.
