Arizona lawmakers may be about ready to kill the idea of building a border fence with donated money. A state law in 2011 set up a committee to solicit funds to put up fencing on private property. That fund now contains about $264,000. The federal government has been spending about $3 million a mile for the fencing it has built. 

Representative David Stevens, who cochairs the committee, said he is looking at other potential options involving border security.

“Are you going to buy a Global Hawk drone? No, 'cause they're multi-million dollars. Can you buy a Pioneer 100 drone? Probably, if that's what you want to do," Stevens said.

Representative Steve Smith who came up with the idea, said he is not ready to give up on a fence, because building any length would prove it keeps people out, which should generate more donations. The panel is to meet again in December, to decide what to do next.
