An inauguration ceremony will be held for first-time political candidates at the Orpheum Theatre.

In last month’s runoff election for Phoenix City Council seats, Betty Guardado beat Vania Guevara in District 5, which covers much of west Phoenix. Guardado captured 62 percent of the vote.

In District 8, which includes parts of east Phoenix, downtown, south Phoenix and Laveen, Carlos Garcia beat Mike Johnson with 51.5 percent of the vote.

Garcia campaigned on increasing police oversight and transparency at city hall while Guardado focused on safer neighborhoods, better roads and getting residents more involved in city decision-making.

The two seats opened after Daniel Valenzuela and Kate Gallego resigned to run for mayor. Gallego was elected in March.

The event at 203 W. Adams Street begins at 10 a.m. Thursday and is open to the public.
