TUCSON -- Pima and Cochise counties have finished more than a week-long recount in the 2nd Congressional District race between Republican Challenger Martha McSally and Democratic representative Ron Barber. The winner is set to be announced on Wednesday.

The final step was a hand recount of 5 percent of polling place precincts. Both Pima and Cochise counties reported exact matches to the machine recounts.

Elections officials finished counting a little more than 220,000 ballots electronically in District 2 last week. Now results are being handed over to the Arizona Secretary of State’s Office.

The final outcome will be announced Wednesday morning by Judge Katherine Cooper at the Maricopa County Superior Court, who ordered the recount. Martha McSally led Ron Barber by a slim 161 votes following the election, leading to a mandatory recount by state law.

Both campaigns, as well as outside groups, took legal action during the original tally of votes and recount.
