The Poco Fire burning near Young, Ariz. has grown to 3,700 acres, although Fire Information Officer Deryl Jevons says the blaze is not spreading as quickly. Jevons says the fire is threatening two 500 kilo-volt power lines, but he says firefighters are having success at keeping that threat at bay.

Phoenix’s mayor is in Washington, D.C. today. He joined a bipartisan group at the release of a new study on how automatic budget cuts would affect the country. The Budget Control Act of 2011 created a so-called supercommittee that looked at reducing the deficit and increasing revenues, but it repeatedly failed to reach an agreement, meaning that automatic, widespread cuts called budget sequestration are scheduled to hit in January.

A Maricopa County Superior Court judge says a proposed initiative to change Arizona’s primary election system is unconstitutional and will not be on November’s ballot. Judge Mark Brain ruled the language in the Open Elections/Open Government Act is too broad and violates the Arizona Constitution by including more than one proposed constitutional amendment in the same ballot measure.

The Mayo Clinic plans to integrate its cancer treatment programs in Phoenix. The project will add on to a facility already under construction. The Mayo Clinic’s Proton Beam Therapy Center is slated to open in 2016 and provide targeted radiation treatments.
