Federal authorities have accused an Avondale man of being a recruiter for the Islamic State.

An FBI agent said Ahmed Mohammed El Gammal went to Manhattan in 2014 to draft a 24-year-old college student seeking to join ISIS, federal court documents show. The government alleges the unidentified student traveled to Syria by way of Turkey, was trained by terrorists and sent a message to El Gammal in May saying everything was going according to plan.

During a town hall with veterans this week, Arizona Sen. John McCain said El Gammal’s is a reminder of the dangers of ISIS and he beleives more resources are needed to defeat the terrorist group.

“I think it should heighten our awareness, of the proximity, of this evil, this perversion of a honorable religion, has come to our homes,” McCain said.

El Gammal is the fourth Valley man this year who has been accused of being involved in terrorism. But it is unknown if there is any connection between El Gammal and the other three men authorities have connected to ISIS.

Elton Simpson and Nadir Soofi were killed in May while trying to assault a draw the prophet Mohammed contest in Garland, Texas. Kareem Abdul Malik Kareem was arrested in June on suspicion of helping them plot the failed assault.
