The Glendale City Council will consider on Sept. 8 whether to hire a Massachusetts-based firm to help gather bids for Gila River Arena management.

The Arizona Coyotes have remained manager of the arena as part of a revised deal struck this summer after the club sued the city over a council vote to end its lease.

If approved, the agreement with Beacon Sports Capital Partners LLC would last for 10 months. Glendale Mayor Jerry Weiers said the proposed deal would not mean the city is seeking to replace the Coyotes and it would help Glendale ensure the arena is being run as efficiently as possible.  

But Councilman Gary Sherwood said he thinks Glendale should spend the rest of 2015 trying to broker a new management agreement with the Coyotes. If a deal can't be reached, then the city should hire the firm in January, Sherwood said.  

“It’s sending a message to the Coyotes that we’re more interested in farming this thing out, the arena management deal, than sitting down with them and negotiating something that is fair for both sides,” Sherwood said.

A Coyotes representative declined comment Thursday.

Sherwood is facing a recall election in November.
