Phoenix City Council To Weigh Expanding Bus-Service Hours Again

The Phoenix City Council will decide whether to expand bus-service hours for the second time in less than a year when it meets on Wednesday.

If approved, the roughly $13 million proposal would extend Friday and Saturday hours until 2 a.m., and Sunday hours would increase to 11 p.m.

The project is part of a sales-tax increase voters approved in 2015, said Brenda Yanez, spokeswoman for the Phoenix Public Transit Department.

“When Transportation 2050 was being formed with public comments, this was one of the things that bus riders wanted more,” Yanez said. “They wanted more service. They wanted longer hours.”

If the City Council signs off on the plan, service hours for buses will match schedules for light rail and Dial-a-Ride, Yanez said. The new hours would take effect in April.
