Economist: Subsidies, Not Tariffs, Would Benefit U.S. Solar Industry

The Trump administration this week imposed a 30 percent tariff on solar panel components. That rate will decline over the next few years.

Many manufacturers have complained about cheaper products coming from foreign competition, but companies that install the panels worry the move will slow down the increase in the United States solar market.

Ed Barbier is a professor of economics at Colorado State University and advocates a different approach to help American manufacturers.
