For the second year, the Arizona Department of Transportation is calling for some clever minds to enter their Safety Message Contest. It's an opportunity for Arizonans to express creativity to promote safe driving on the agency's popular freeway monitor signs.

ADOT spokesman Doug Pacey said that the thought behind the occassional messages on signs that typically flash traffic messages and Amber and Silver Alerts is to allude to something popular in society, like a holiday, sporting event, concert or trending topic.

"Maybe it spurs people to make the right decision that time or moving forward," Pacey said, "because we need to improve our driving to help make the roads safer."

Entries are being accepted on ADOT's website from now until Feb. 26. The agency will select 15 finalists and the public will vote for two winners. There's no cash prize, but the winning messages will be flashed statewide.

Last year's winning messages were "That's the temperature, not the speed limit" and "Single and HOV: get a real date, not a court date."
