Faculty members at the Maricopa Community College District are upset about a proposed change in the way administrators and the faculty communicate.

The governing board will consider a resolution next week that would do away with the "meet and confer" process, which has been in place for many years.

Mike Mitchell is an English faculty member at Paradise Valley Community College and the current president of the Maricopa Community Colleges Faculty Association. He joins The Show's Mark Brodie to discuss concerns with getting rid of "meet and confer."

At last night’s meeting, Governing Board President Laurin Hendrix said he wants to give the chancellor more power to do her job and said there’s a lot of paranoia from faculty over this proposed change.

We also reached out to the district for a comment about this proposed change.

In an e-mailed statement, Chancellor Maria Harper-Marinick said, "The administration is committed to ensuring a participatory process for the development of residential faculty policies. Our goals are to ensure students receive the best educational experiences and services possible and to continue our long tradition of collaboration with faculty and other employees. That is what is in the best interest of Maricopa. We will work to preserve our long-standing support for faculty involvement in important policy development and other decisions within a revised policy development framework as may be directed by our Governing Board."
