The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services will be updating its physical activity guidelines this year.

The department will be basing the update off of a study conducted by health experts. ASU Professor Matthew Buman served as a consultant for the research.

"Sitting that's lasting something along the lines of 30 minutes or longer, those long forms of sitting appear to be particularly detrimental," he said.

The study also suggests exercise can be beneficial in minute-long bursts.

The government's official update is expected later this year.
