Stanton Sworn in as Phoenix Mayor

January 03, 2012

Greg Stanton took the oath of office today, becoming mayor of Phoenix. And, he’s talking about ideas that go beyond Arizona’s capitol city.  From Phoenix, KJZZ’s Mark Brodie reports.

MARK BRODIE: In his inaugural address, Stanton discussed the need to diversify the city’s economy, saying boom and bust is not the best path.  He also said he wants the other cities in the metro area to succeed - not out of benevolence, but out of necessity.

GREG STANTON: "So, as mayor, I won’t waste my time thinking about competing with Glendale, Tempe or Mesa. That’s self-defeating. Instead, Phoenix will partner with all the cities in our region and state, to compete successfully with Shanghai and Frankfurt."

Stanton says the Valley, and its cities, will sink or swim as a region.  He became the 52nd mayor of Phoenix, taking over for Phil Gordon.
