Gov. Brewer Calls for More Tax Cuts, Less Regulation in State of the State Address
Governor Jan Brewer looked back…and forward in her state of the state address to the centennial legislature Monday. From Phoenix, KJZZ’s Mark Brodie reports.
MARK BRODIE: The governor told lawmakers Arizona has been saved…and touted the state’s positive cash balance and smaller government. And, she called for more of the policies she says helped make that happen.
JAN BREWER: "Together, just like last year, let’s continue to lower taxes and cut regulation and tell all employers that Arizona means business."
MARK BRODIE: Brewer also talked up the state’s job growth in the past year, but said there’s more to be done. And, she promised the one cent sales tax increase would end, as scheduled, next year. But, even without that revenue, the governor says the state has to improve its education system.
JAN BREWER: "That’s my commitment to children for the next century…quality teachers, a safe environment, a setting of parents’ choosing, data driven decisions and the highest of standards. That’s the foundation for job creation."
MARK BRODIE: In addition, the governor called on lawmakers to send her, by Statehood Day, a bill to buy back the capitol complex. The legislature included many state buildings in a sale leaseback plan to help balance recent state budgets.
