Maricopa County Animal Care and Control is extending a quarantine at its East Valley shelter as it continues to fight an outbreak of a canine distemper virus.

The shelter has been under quarantine since the beginning of June.

As of Thursday afternoon, 33 cases have been confirmed positive for the distemper virus at the east shelter.

Spokesman Jose Santiago said they are still working to create space at the West Valley shelter.

This weekend, adult dogs that weigh more than 30 pounds can be adopted for the license fee only of $21. The quarantine is being extended until July 1 at the earliest.
