Republican Lawmakers Propose Cost-Control Bill For Border Security
Republican lawmakers in Arizona introduced a bill Thursday that would better manage the costs and deadlines of equipment used on the U.S.'s borders.
Rep. Martha McSally's and Sen. John McCain’s bill would require border-security agencies to build cost controls into new equipment acquired to monitor the border. Both lawmakers said the bill is intended to clamp down on mismanagement of new technologies and border security programs such as radar systems.
The proposed legislation also requires that Customs and Border Protection create a plan for how to independently test new border security technology. The agency has been criticized in the past for buying expensive technology that either didn’t work or was never used.
