Fees for Coconino National Forest campgrounds could increase substantially later this year.

For example, under the proposal, camping at the Moqui site would move from $30 per night to $100.

Spokesman George Jozens said it’s been more than a decade since any fees have changed in the Mogollon Ranger District.

“It’s going to cover things like vault toilet repair, adding toilets, cleaning of them, people coming to pick up trash at those sites," Jozens said.

While Jozens admits campers may perceive sticker shock, “some of the group campgrounds hold between 50-300 people and up to 50 vehicles. So, it’s really a good bargain when you compare those prices to a KOA for instance.”

The public may comment on the proposed fee changes until Oct. 15 by emailing [email protected] or submitting written comments to Coconino National Forest, Mogollon Rim Ranger District, Attn: Recreation Fee Program, 8738 Ranger Road, Happy Jack, AZ 86024.
