After the 9/11 attacks, a federal law was passed requiring new forms of identification at airports. Beginning in October 2020, passengers will need the new Travel ID or some other federal identification in order to board a flight.

Arizona Department of Transportation spokesman Doug Nick said the agency has changed some of its rules to help Arizonans make the transition.

“We’ve actually changed the requirements for getting your driver license regardless of whether you get the Travel ID or a non-compliant license. We still want you to bring in all the documents that you would need for the Travel ID, so if you do choose to get it, you’ll have everything you need," Nick said.

With the deadline 13 months away, Gov. Doug Ducey and Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego launched an awareness campaign Thursday called “Don’t Get Grounded.”
