Phoenix Council To Discuss Police Oversight

Published: Monday, September 16, 2019 - 5:05am

On Tuesday, Phoenix council members will hold a work study session to discuss civilian oversight of the police department.

The meeting comes at the request of Mayor Kate Gallego. After public protests over police behavior, Gallego asked staff to research options for civilian oversight.

The council will review options that include three general categories:

  • a review focused model that includes an independent investigation into a set of issues
  • a monitor model focused on data review and recommendations
  • an investigations model focused on predetermined areas or performing parallel investigations with the police department.

The meeting is meant to discuss ideas and because no action will be taken there will be no time scheduled for public comment. Another work study session to discuss oversight has been scheduled for Oct. 15, 2019, if needed.
