Arizona Storytellers – Keiona Eady
Jeremiah Toller/Arizona Republic
Keiona Eady shares her story at the Growing Up event at The Churchill on April 9, 2019.

KJZZ partners with the Arizona Republic to bring you the Arizona Storytellers series. We record the live events and share them with you on the radio. In Phoenix, the storytellers share stories about our community or the life events that have shaped them.

Keiona Eady grew up in a small South Carolina town. She was outgoing and a straight-A student.

Eady says her life was perfect and believed her mother was perfect in every way. One day, when she was 11, Keiona and her mom drove to the next town for some one-on-one mother-daughter time. But on that trip, her mom told her she might have to go away for a while and that Keiona needed to take care of her brother and sister.

The next day, her mom wasn't home after school. And at school the following day, a classmate told Eady her mother went in jail.

Eady is the founder of the "New Geechee" podcast.

The next storytelling event is Thursday, Sept.19, at Desert Botanical Garden. To learn more about the Arizona Storytellers project or how to tell your own story, visit storytellersproject.com
