Abortion Now Legal In 2 Mexican States
Lawmakers in the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca decriminalized abortion on Wednesday, making it the second state in the country to do so.
Lawmakers approved the measure in a 24-10 vote in a crowded chamber where activists in favor and against the legislation shouted and interrupted debate on multiple occasions, according to local media reports. A crowd erupted in cheers when the vote was tallied.
State Deputy Magaly Lopez Dominguez said on the legislative floor that her vote wasn't in favor of abortion, but in favor of women having a right to choose.
The measure allows a woman to request abortion legally until the 12th week of pregnancy.
Mexico City, which is officially a state, in 2007 became the first local government to decriminalize in the country.
