Good news for the City of Phoenix, after years of budget cuts and belt tightening, the city is projecting a surplus for next year. KJZZ’s Al Macias reports.

AL MACIAS: Two years ago city of Phoenix was looking at a $277 million shortfall. Now things have changed dramatically. Planners say the city is looking at a $10-15 million surplus for the next fiscal year, which starts July 1.

That translates to restoration of services including expanded library hours and extending the swimming pool season. Additional staff in the police and fire departments is also proposed. Other recreation and senior citizen programs are also recommended.

Planners say even with additional positions the city will have its lowest staffing rate in 40 years. The tentative budget must still pass review by the city council and the public at 17 hearings to be scheduled around the city.
