Fountain Hills To Build $18 Million Dark Sky Discovery Center

Fountain Hills has announced plans to build a 15,000-square-foot International Dark Sky Discovery Center.
The $18 million center is slated to open in the town center in 2021 or 2022.
Fountain Hills gained status as one of 22 International Dark Sky Communities — and 120 International Dark Sky Places — last year.
The town's skies benefit from the McDowell Mountains, which help block the city glow of nearby Phoenix.
Fundraising efforts are now underway for the discovery center, which will include interactive exhibits along with an observatory, planetarium and theater.
International Dark Sky Places preserve and protect dark sites through lighting policies and public education.
Other designated communities in Arizona include Oak Creek, Camp Verde, Flagstaff and Sedona.
