California condor N8 was listed as "missing and feared dead" in February until Franz Carver, a ranger at Mesa Verde National Park, saw it near Cortez, Colo.

A California condor "missing and feared dead" from near Grand Canyon National Park has been found by 200 miles from home near Cortez, Colo.

The bird was released last June near the Grand Canyon. The 2-year-old male, identified as N8, also known as bird 680, was listed by the park as "missing and feared dead" in February.

The Cortez Journal reported the bird was spotted by a park ranger near Mesa Verde National Park in southwestern Colorado last week.

The condor has a GPS transmitter, but he apparently went out of contact range.

The California condor is one of the largest North American land birds, with a wing-span of up to 10 feet. They were reintroduced in northern Arizona and southern Utah after being bred in captivity. There are an estimated 425 left.

More than 70 of the big birds live in the Grand Canyon National Park, according to the park’s wildlife biologists.
