Glendale’s city manager has reduced the 40-hour suspension of a police officer who was found to have violated use-of-force policy.

Glendale City Manager Kevin Phelps reduced Officer Matthew Salyers original suspension of 40 hours to 30 working hours.

In March, Salyers conducted a traffic stop. When the 57-year-old driver failed to produce identification, Salyers and another officer attempted to arrest the driver. The driver resisted, and Salyers struck the driver’s face, causing an injury that required stitches.

In May, the Glendale Police Department levied the original 40-hour suspension. In a statement, Interim Chief Chris Briggs said, “there are times when our officers’ decisions are not in line with our policies or training, which is the case in this incident.”
