Arizona lawmakers are preparing to fight for a bill that requires schools to train students and teachers how to recognize and report sexual abuse.

It’s called “Erin’s Law” after Erin Merryn, an abuse survivor from Illinois who has fought to get the law passed in 37 states since 2013.

Arizona had the chance to join those states during the 2018 and 2019 legislative sessions, but those efforts stalled. Now, supporters are preparing to try again in 2020, setting up a battle with legislators questioning how much schools should teach about sex and relationships, even when the goal is to prevent abuse.

Julia Shumway is covering this debate ahead of the next session for the Arizona Capitol Times, and joined The Show to talk about it.
