MEXICO CITY — This holiday season, Mexico expects the return of more than 3 million Mexicans living abroad — the vast majority coming from the U.S. And the government is launching a program to help them as they journey home.

Every year since 2013, during December and early January, the Mexican government implements the Paisano program to protect and assess expats coming back to visit the country.

Paisano will feature more than 350 booths at border crossings, airports and city squares to provide information on issues such as health, taxes and road assistance. And this year, a guest institution will help.

Luis Rodríguez Bucio, commander of Mexico’s recently created National Guard, announced that a specialized task force will reinforce security to protect the travelers.

The Paisano program is also launching an app for travelers to report extortion attempts.
