DOJ: Can't trust communication with MCSO, will likely end up in court
It looks like the Department of Justice is going ahead with plans to sue Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio over alleged civil rights violations.The latest letter from DOJ to the sheriff says there will be more no more telephone communications. KJZZ’s Al Macias reports.
The letter from Deputy Assistant Attorney General Roy Austin says there will be no more verbal communications from the Department of Justice.
Austin says there’s no sense in talking any more because the sheriff’s office will not accurately portray those conversations.
According to the Arizona Republic, DOJ says at this point it’s best to let the courts decide.
Sheriff Arpaio rejected an independent monitor to oversee the proposed settlement between the DOJ and sheriff. He claimed the monitor would take away his authority over his department. Such monitors are considered standard in settlements with the Justice Department.
DOJ has not said when it plans to file suit.
