MEXICO CITY — Many travelers drove back from Mexico last weekend as the holiday season came to an end. But one family was unable to make it back, after being attacked a few miles from the U.S. border.

On Sunday, a 13-year-old American boy was killed and four relatives were wounded on a two-lane highway in Ciudad Mier, an area bordering Texas in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas.

According to reports, the family was traveling in two vehicles with Oklahoma license plates.

Unidentified attackers tried to block the vehicles, but as the family refused to stop, the gunmen cut them off, making them crash, while opening fire. The attackers are on the run.

The border zone of Tamaulipas is considered a high-risk area due to ongoing battles between criminal organizations.
