Glendale residents will vote whether to recall a council member on the ballot in November.

Petitioners collected nearly 3,000 signatures for the recall election.

Gary Sherwood believes he’s being challenged because he changed his position to support the Tohono O’odham casino.

Sherwood said he’s going to fight it and is confident he will be able to stay in office.

“I know I have a lot of support, financial support as well as boots on the ground,” he said. “The shame of it is that I have to extend them for something so silly. If there had been something illegal done or something very inappropriate that’s one thing.”

Sherwood changed his position to support the Tohono O’odham casino after meeting in person with tribal leaders. He represents the Sahuaro District of Glendale.

According to City Clerk Pam Hanna, this is the second recall election in the city’s history.

“There was one in 1992 that was prior to my coming to the city of Glendale. And that councilmember was not removed from office at that time,” Hanna said.

On the November ballot, voters will decide whether to recall Sherwood and vote for a candidate to replace him.
