Arizona State Superintendent of Public Instruction Kathy Hoffman gave the first ever State of Special Education address before the Senate Education Committee on Tuesday afternoon.
Every year, the superintendent delivers a state of education address before the House and Senate education committees.
This year, Hoffman broke the mold.
While she delivered the traditional speech before representatives in the House, Hoffman focused her speech in the Senate on special education.
It’s a personal priority for Hoffman, who worked as a speech therapist in public schools before her election in 2018.
"I have heard countless times that our underfunded special education system leaves many schools with difficult choices on where to make cuts in order to provide services — choices that they should not have to make," Hoffman said.
Hoffman said special education often gets overlooked in broader conversations about school funding.
And she plans to make her state of special education address an annual tradition.
