Arizona is exporting more than ever. New data show the state reaching a record high for exported goods in 2019 and ranking sixth nationwide for states growing export dollars.

Arizona's export total grew to $24.7 billion in 2019, a record high for the state and an increase of 9.7% from last year. Mexico is the main reason as the growth in Arizona exports to Mexico is in part why the country is now the state’s top trading partner. Arizona’s second largest trading partner actually reduced the amount it took in last year.

Glenn Williamson is CEO of the Canada-Arizona Business Council. He says Canada's economic contribution is not imports from Arizona but imports to Arizona, which he says largely go uncounted.

"Canada being the largest foreign direct investor in the state of Arizona by a very significant amount. And also from a tourism point of view, we do about a million Canadians a year coming down here and they spend about $1 billion," Williamson said.

The U.S. Census Bureau shows a 4.4% drop in Arizona's exports to Canada last year. Exports to Mexico grew by 7% over the same time period.

Arizona exports to Netherlands, Japan, France and the United Arab Emirates also increased last year.
