American Airlines employees voted to keep the airline’s one-year-old logo. The Texas-based carrier merged with Tempe based U.S. Airways last year.

The 60,000 employees were given two choices, the new design featuring red, white and blue horizontal stripes on the planes’ tails or a return to the old logo, the letters "AA" below an eagle silhouette. 52 percent voted for the new design.

The company plans to repaint more than 1,100 American, US Airways and US Airways Express planes.

Voting on the tail design is one of several symbolic moves CEO Doug Parker has made to reach out to employees, who clashed with American's previous management. He has removed the parking spots that had been reserved for executives at the airline's Fort Worth headquarters.

Other major challenges include combining the computer systems and workforces of American and US Airways.
