The Hermosillo Ford plant is one of the largest employers in the city.

The Ford Motor factory in Hermosillo, Sonora, is shutting down temporarily for a deep cleaning to protect workers from the coronavirus.

The massive facility, which employs nearly 3,000 workers, and Ford’s other North American plants will close through March 30, according to a recent release from the company.

When the Hermosillo plant reopens, work will be cut to a single shift with crews switching out every two weeks, according to Ricardo Martinez, head of the union representing workers there. The resting crew will receive 75% pay, but other contract benefits will be unaffected.

“In the short term, we don’t know how long the contingency plan will last,” he said. “But we’re preparing precisely to cut the chain of contamination.”
