Reports from China and Italy suggest old age and certain underlying health conditions can raise the risk of developing more severe coronavirus symptoms.

Now, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has released data describing such patterns in the U.S.

In a preliminary report involving a small percentage of reported cases, the CDC found three quarters of hospitalized COVID-19 patients had underlying health conditions or risk factors — typically diabetes, chronic lung disease or cardiovascular disease.

In Arizona, diabetes rates consistently meet or exceed national averages, heart disease accounts for 30% of deaths, and COPD, Arizona's third-leading cause of death, occurs at almost double the national average in Gila, La Paz, Mohave and Navajo counties.
