Navajo officials have ordered a weekend curfew starting Friday night and ending Monday morning to slow the spread of COVID-19. There are 384 cases on the Navajo Nation and 15 confirmed deaths as of Monday.

Navajo President Jonathan Nez said in a statement, the tribe's health care system cannot manage the growing numbers of patients. He said his office continues to receive reports of people traveling with families to nearby border towns. The latest virus projections show the tribe has not reached its peak yet.

The weekend 57-hour curfew is in addition to a nightly curfew. The Navajo police plan to increase checkpoints and issue fines to enforce stay-at-home orders.
The curfew does not apply to essential employees.
