Second COVID-19 Case At ICE La Palma Correctional Center

Another immigrant in federal custody in Arizona has now tested positive for COVID-19.

An Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokeswoman confirmed that a 24-year-old Guatemalan national being held at the La Palma Correctional Center in Eloy was diagnosed.

Staff and other inmates are now being monitored for symptoms, Yasmeen Pitts O'Keefe stated in an email. Last week, a man transported to the center in preparation for deportation was the agency’s first case in Arizona.

Deportations of people carrying the virus are common enough now that the Guatemalan government asked the U.S. to limit deportation flights to just 25 people in hopes of stemming the flow.

ICE has been tracking cases of infected coronavirus victims and reported that so far, 48 employees and 13 people in detention have now been diagnosed.
