The Florence Immigrant and Refugee Rights Project recently sued Immigration and Customs Enforcement to force the release of eight people vulnerable to COVID-19, and the legal aid group says federal authorities have let some of those clients go.

The Florence Project said it spent weeks asking ICE to release eight people with chronic medical conditions like HIV, diabetes and asthma.

The legal aid group then sued ICE to force their release on the same day the agency revealed a confirmed case of COVID-19 at an Arizona detention facility.

The case was at the La Palma Correctional Center, where most of the eight detainees with health conditions were being held.

The lawsuit is moving forward in federal court.

The Florence Project says four of the eight people have been released, and it looks forward to the release of other vulnerable detainees still in ICE custody.
