Sonoran Senator Breaks With Mexico President’s Morena Party

Sonoran Sen. Lilly Téllez announced on Twitter on Tuesday that she had left the Morena party of President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador over differences of opinion.
A former journalist, Téllez took office in September 2018 as part of the Morena coalition.
But she has broken with the party since the beginning on several issues, including her opposition to legalizing abortion in Mexico. And last December, Morena members asked that she be expelled from the party’s Senate caucus.
In Tuesday’s tweet, Téllez thanked the president and others for their respect toward her and said she will continue to serve as an independent senator, “committed to speaking the truth.”
