Pinal Air Park
Jim Petty/Pinal County
Planes and helicopters parked at the Pinal Air Park near Marana.

Airports that are typically bustling with noise and travelers have been reduced to quiet shells, as COVID-19 has nearly halted travel.

In response to the virus, airlines have dramatically cut back on flights rather than going cross-country with empty planes. Many of those planes have simply been grounded, and a number of them have ended up in Arizona, parked at the Pinal Air Park near Marana.

Jim Petty is the air park’s airport manager. The Show spoke with him and asked him to describe the surreal scene.
