1 Dead, 1 Injured In Mesa Helicopter Crash
One man was killed an another injured when a helicopter crashed in a Mesa park, authorities said.
Mesa police Detective Nik Rasheta says the helicopter went down in Sherwood Park, near the U.S. 60 and Horne. Bystanders were able to help until responders could arrive.
"We know there were two occupants inside, bystanders were pretty quickly able to get to them and pull them out of the helicopter," Rasheta said. "Unfortunately one of them was declared deceased at the scene, another one was transported to the hospital. I’m told he was alert and talking at the time he was transported."
The Bell “Huey” UH-1H crashed under unknown circumstances, the Federal Aviation Administration said.
Jerry Ferguson, a helicopter photographer for Channels 3 and 5, told the television stations that he saw the chopper go down while driving home.
“As I drove down U.S. 60, I looked up, and saw the helicopter fly directly over me, and it was kind of wiggling back and forth,” Ferguson said. “As it came overhead, it completely lost control and started spinning down toward the ground.” said Ferguson.
The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating.
