Proposed I-10 improvement project.

The Arizona Department of Transportation received final environmental approval on its massive construction project that will expand 11 miles of Interstate 10 from Ray Road in Tempe to the I-17 interchange near Sky Harbor Airport.

The environmental impact study found the project would have no significant environmental impact, which means design and construction are clear to begin.

ADOT says this will be one of the most disruptive transportation projects the region has ever seen. More than 300,000 vehicles drive through the Broadway Curve each day. And when construction starts next summer, the 11-mile corridor will see frequent restrictions and closures.

When the project finishes, though, the freeway will have extra lanes, new interchanges and pedestrian overpasses.

ADOT says construction should run from summer 2021 until late 2024.
