The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office says it has confirmed the first inmate in county jails to test positive for COVID-19.

MCSO said an individual displayed COVID-19 symptoms during an intake screening and was subsequently put in an isolation cell.

The inmate was then transferred to a Medical Observation Housing Unit and tested for COVID-19.

While the test was pending, the individual was released on April 29. On April 30, the test came back positive.

MCSO says it is identifying staff that potentially had contact with the inmate.

So far, 123 MCSO inmates have been tested, and 15 are currently in isolation pending results.
