The director of a southern Sonora news site was killed in an armed attack over the weekend.

Jorge Miguel Armenta, the founder of Medios Obson, was leaving a restaurant in Ciudad Obregon on Saturday afternoon when he and his police escort were attacked by gunmen. Armenta and a police officer were killed, and a second officer was wounded.

He had that escort because of previous threats made against him, according to Jan-Albert Hootsen, Mexico representative for the Committee to Protect Journalists.

“I think it’s very likely, or very possible, that he was targeted either because of his work or because of his ties to local politics,” Hootsen said.

The State Attorney’s Office is investigating the case, and officials say they are not discounting any potential motives.

On Saturday, State Attorney Claudia Indira Contreras said that the victims’ professions would be considered and vowed that the crime would not go unpunished.
