An Arizona Board of Regents committee is supporting a proposal to suspend previously scheduled compensation increases for university presidents.

The proposal by the presidents and the board’s executive director also asks the Finance, Capital and Resources Committee on Thursday to support the presidents’ decisions to lead and participate in university reduction-in-pay initiatives or approved furlough programs. Northern Arizona University and University of Arizona have already announced furlough plans as the schools face financial uncertainty due to the coronavirus pandemic.

In addition, they proposed authorizing university presidents to make amendments, if needed, to the contracts of head coaches and athletics directors to reflect their participation.

“I appreciate the willingness of the presidents on these matters and hope that with the passage of time, and hopefully not too much time, we’ll all get a lot more clarity and go back to some semblance of normalcy, but in the interim I think this is very prudent course," said the committee's chairwoman Karrin Taylor Robson.

The proposal passed in the committee and will be discussed by the full board next month.
