Guidance from the state and health department are fueling plans to reopen classrooms beginning this fall. However, Arizona Education Association’s Marisol Garcia, says this is too soon because some schools open as early as mid-July.

“There’s really only a month to figure out how comfortable they are as far as exposure and what the real rates are of health concerns and how the exposure levels might be," Garcia said.

Garcia predicts not every school will be up and running as planned. Some districts may stick to online learning, while others may do a hybrid. But, she says, educators find themselves with a new job description: health monitor.

Superintendent Kathy Hoffman spoke with KJZZ’s The Show on Monday to discuss the next steps to reopen schools.
