Maricopa County has announced its first three heat-related deaths of the year.

Two men, one in his 60s and one in his 80s, recently died from heat-related causes, as well as another person from a neighboring county who died in Maricopa County.

Dr. Rebecca Sunenshine, medical director for Disease Control at Maricopa County Health Department, urges the public to keep hydrated, take breaks and check on neighbors.

“Even though much of our emphasis has been on slowing the spread of COVID-19, it is important that we remember to also take the precautions necessary to stay safe in our summer heat," said Sunenshine in a press release. “This includes staying hydrated, taking frequent breaks from the heat and checking on neighbors.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that more people in the U.S. die each year from heat than all other natural disasters combined. Last year Maricopa County had 197 heat-related deaths, the highest amount on record.
