About 700 Arizona health care professionals have sent a letter to Gov. Doug Ducey asking for him to mandate the use of masks in public.

Coincidentally, the day the letter was delivered, Arizona experienced its biggest one-day surge of nearly 2,400 cases.

One doctor who signed the letter, Dr. Sam Durrani, says even if only 50% of residents wear masks, it would reduce transmission.

"This is a really simple thing we are asking people to do. To be socially responsible and to protect, really, the health care system," Durrani said.

He says because of the delay between transmission and hospitalization, anything done now will affect the numbers two weeks from now. He says it's important for the state to act quickly, as the number of cases rise, in order to get ahead of the curve.
