The White Mountain Apache Tribe usually see big summer crowds visiting this time of year. But now tribe spokesman Jerry Gloshay Jr. says the streets are empty.
The federal government has granted the White Mountain Apache Tribe $3 million to respond to the coronavirus.
More than one eighth of the White Mountain Apache Tribe’s 13,500 residents have tested positive for COVID-19. So tribal leaders shut down the reservation to visitors and ordered residents to stay home for two weeks.
“This is the first time ever in the tribe’s history that we’re doing this,” said Jerry Gloshay Jr., the executive office chief of staff. “It’s a serious killer this invisible virus. We don’t know where it’s at and we don’t want it to go into your home.”
The tribe plans to use the $3 million federal grant to build eight transitional housing units to help people who need to quarantine away from loved ones at home.
